Relay For Life Needs Cancer Study Volunteers

Anyone between the ages of 30-65 who has never been diagnosed with cancer is eligible to participate.

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life-Easton is seeking participants for a Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3) to take place June 15, 2012, Metzgar Field at .

The CPS-3 builds on a history of American Cancer Society-sponsored follow-up studies which started in the 1950s and have provided insight into the causes of cancer.

"Past studies have made a difference in people's lives," said Rosemarie Murphy of the American Cancer Society. "We ask anyone who has never been diagnosed with cancer to consider signing up. If you are a family member or friend of a survivor, this is a good way to fight back."

Key findings from previous studies include: the effect of cigarette smoking and secondhand smoke on lung cancer and premature death; the link between larger waist size and increased death rates from cancer and other causes, and the impact of air pollution on heart and lung conditions.

The study involves two steps for participants, one in person at and one at home.

At , participants will be asked to sign in, complete a brief written survey, provide some physical measurements, and give a small blood sample drawn by a certified phlebotomist.

At home, participants will need to complete a more comprehensive survey. Follow-up surveys will be mailed every few years to update information.

Signing up now does not require an absolute commitment, but rather ensures that anyone who may be interested in participating in the study is kept informed of details and developments.

Every effort is made to protect the privacy of study participants; multiple procedures are in place to safeguard all personal information collected.
