Wilson Schedules Hurricane Make-Up Days

Students in Wilson will have fewer days off this school year, thanks to the unexpected break they received last week from Hurricane Sandy.
The Wilson Area School Board voted Monday night to approve five make-up days to help keep this year's class schedule on track.
The days are:
- Nov. 26
- Jan. 21
- March 25, 26 and 27
Superintendent Doug Wagner praised his staff for its response to the storm, and noted that the district saw a high attendance rate Monday following a week without school.
"It shows you we have parents who are committed to our education," he said. "Or…they were just DONE.”

Also I would suggest except for parent teacher conferences...please have full days and no half days. Tax payers would prefer that the students have 180 full days of educational teaching. The 180 days should be in addition to PSSA testing days. We want 180 full days of instruction. Obviously weather related early dismissals are understandable. But please consider not to just go for the minimum days and know that our kids need to be prepared for college (if that is their goal). Getting into college is one thing....actually being prepared to graduate college is quite another thing. I am concerned that students are challenged enough to be prepared for college. Also I am concerned that students who are not college bound NEED to be learning a vocation at CIT. Even those who are college bound would do well to get a vocation at CIT and be prepared to get a job in case they need to have a job while attending college. Learning a trade should be encouraged to ALL. There is much pride in learning a trade. So encourage students to get a FULL 180 days on top of the PSSA testing days. No half days or party / free days....that is for summer.

A better option would be to completely eliminate the unnecessary, misapplied, and time-wasting PSSAs altogether. Teaching to a test, and 'grading' the teachers by its outcome is ridiculous. A terrible student will learn nothing from a great teacher. Eliminate these days off: President's Day, Martin Luther Day, Easter vacation, and the Monday after Thanksgiving. Adding 1/2 days to the end of the school year is a waste of time; nothing is learned the last two weeks anyway. It's also a waste of gas and electricity.

It was a state of emergency, why do they have to make them up? There was no possible way the students could go to school without electricity and the roads blocked by trees. It's not like the school said, lets have a week off at the end of October for the hell of it. I remember back in the 90's when there was a state of emergency for a huge snow storm, we didn't have to make up the days because the roads were impassable.
