Soul Food Comes to Easton

Sweet Potato Pie and Cornbread are Staples in New Restaurant

Easton's newest restaurant is Ella May Southern Cuisine. Three women recently opened the soul food restaurant at 1029 Butler Street on Aug. 13.

"We offer food for the stomach, as well as food for the soul," said Wanda Alleyne, who runs the restaurant with daughter Yedaiah Alleyne and friend Tyiesha Hinton. "The foundation here is spiritual. There's no other place like this in the area."

Everything here is homemade. Some of the menu offerings include meals of fried chicken, smothered pork chops, fish and Southern style desserts, including banana pudding and sweet potato pie.

Collard greens, blackeyes peas, potato salad and cornbread can round out the meals. Now that the weather is cooling, they will be making homemade soups. Diners can eat in or take out.

Chicken wings are popular. "These are not those little skinny wings, but big ones," said Wanda, a former pediatric nurse in New York City. And they will be adding vegan dishes soon. The women will also cater for families or groups, especially over the coming holidays.

But there's a lot more than food here.

They will be bringing in live entertainment this fall, including an open mic night. In addition, they are planning a poetry in motion night. On these evenings, guests will recite poetry--over keyboard music performed by Wanda's son Elisaha Alleyne.

"This will probably be on Friday evenings," said Yedaiah.

Ella May Southern Cuisine is truly a family affair. The place is inviting and pleasant, comfortable and intimate. It was completely remodeled over the summer, and there are tables and chairs for fifteen diners. The name is derived from the names of the owners' grandmothers. The official ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Sept. 10.

The restaurant opens at 11:30 a.m. daily and serves lunch and dinner. It's closed on Mondays. Check out Ella May Southern Cuisine on Facebook, or call them at 610 250-7775.
