Snowboarding Returns to Downtown Easton
The Buttercup, a sequel to last year's Rail Jam, comes to Easton Feb. 11.
For the second year in a row, Easton's Centre Square will become a snowboarding course.
Last year, the city joined forces with Red Bull, the Big Boulder ski resort and Downtown tavern Drinky's for the Rail Jam, a day-long snowboarding event that brought several tons of snow -- and thousands of people -- to the square
This year, that event will return, under a new name.
It's called the Red Bull Butter Cup, part of a series of competitions the energy drink company is sponsoring around the country.
"It takes the Rail Jam to a much larger event," Mayor Sal Panto said Tuesday, during a news conference with the owners of Drinky's and Red Bull represenatives to announce this year's competition.
The Butter Cup -- which gets its name from a snowboarding trick -- comes to Easton on Saturday, Feb. 11.
This year's event will have more corporate sponsors: Nike, Oakley, Forum Snowboarding, and the winter sportswear company Neff.
Panto said there will be more lighting this year in the square, bleachers for spectators, and more parking. Last year, visitors were unable to find anywhere to park.
"We've never had that problem," he said. "We don't have that problem on Heritage Day. We don't have that problem for the Peace Candle lighting."
To correct that, Panto said the city will allow Rail Jam contestants and spectators to park in the Governor Wolf building lot, as well as the site of the former Perkins and Marquis Theater properties on Third Street.
This year's ramp will be wider. Contestants will be required to do the buttercup trick in order to score, said Dave Smith, a snowboarder who acts as a judge/consultant for the event.
Registration for the Butter Cup will be held only on the day of the event, beginning at 2 p.m. The cost to register is $20, and the event is open only to the first 100 contestants.
