Poll: Easton Reacts to Pa. Voter ID Law Ruling

Tell us what you think of the court ruling on Pennsylvania's Voter ID law

Commonwealth Court ruled Wednesday morning not to stop Pennsylvania's controversial new voter identification law from going into effect.

Judge Robert Simpson of Nazareth will not grant an injunction that would have halted the law requiring each voter to show a valid photo ID.

Opponents are expected to file an appeal within a day or two to the state Supreme Court as the Nov. 6 presidential election looms, according to the Associated Press.

The challenge to the law was brought by voter advocacy groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union and the NAACP.

Pennsylvania passed a law in March requiring all registered voters to show a valid and “acceptable” photo ID before voting. This is one of the strictest voter ID laws in the nation.

Opponents of the law say it disproportionately targets the elderly as well as the poor and minorities, who typically vote Democrat. Furthermore, critics say that the burden of obtaining an acceptable ID for these people would keep them from voting. They add that preventing voter fraud is not a serious concern.

Thirty states have some sort of Voter ID law, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Of those, 19 do not require a photo, six require a photo and five, including Pennsylvania, have strict photo requirements.

The reason democrats aren't concerned with voter fraud is because they are the ones who commit it. ACCORN loves Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck!!! Also they love dead people who vote too!!!!

I am a senior citizen who is REQUIRED to show photo ID to every doctor's office I go to. So the complaint that seniors can't get an ID is crap. What are they using for ID's when they go to the doctor or hospital? I believe that church groups and other volunteer service organizations should set up a system whereby anyone in their group (or outside their group) can get free transportation to anyone who needs it to get an ID. Birth certificates can be obtained from Harrisburg; free for veterans and their spouses. So I challenge all organizations, religious or otherwise, to get on the bandwagon and help folks get registered. Elections aren't until November so let's get going!

it's a shame you do not know the law-you are NOT required to provide photo ID to a Dr- they can ask all they want, it's not the law and has no baring on you getting care

KUDOs to you!!! It is refreshing to see a comment with a solution and not just a complaint. I agree that Church and civic groups should start mobilizing now to help those in need of identification so that ALL may vote that have the right and that NONE may cheat. I'm amazed that we are just getting around to requiring identification at the polls. I often thought how easy it would be for anyone to say they were me and vote in my stead. I'm more than glad for the protection of my rights.

You should express your indifference to the estimated 750,000-1,000,000 Pennsylvania citizens who will now have to go thru the process of acquiring the required ID so that they can vote. With less than 3 months till the election, I hope the system can handle the needs of those who are being affected, but that seems unlikely considering it will have to deal with some 200,000-250,000+ new IDs should those people seek to conform. The whole premise that someone might try to commit in-person voter fraud as a motivation for this legislation smacks of big governance, Orwelian even. Yet, alleged conservatives support this measure. Would these same conservatives support ending straw purchases because innocent people might be killed by those buying them, or is that an infringement on their 2nd amendment rights?

Stop saying estimated or believed show real proof isn't that what you always say. Show me one person who doesn't have a State ID or a person who can't get one.

Sorry. That should have read 200,000-250,000+ new IDs per month.

@Bill- can you, or anyone, prove that there is in-person voter fraud that mandates this legislation?

we don't have to because its already a law. You have to prove that the law hurts the people you keep talking about. This law is to prevent anyone from commiting fraud which it will do. Thats what laws do.

@bill- in a free country, it just seems odd to enact laws to protect us against something that might happen. Were that the case, shouldn't we have stricter gun laws, and shouldn't we then also enact stricter environmental protections? I stand by the ascertain that it is wrong to limit the rights of countless citizens in an effort to stop an alleged few who might be voting fraudulently. I question the pace of the legislation, and considering comments by certain state legislators, I question the motive. And if indeed, the end result of such legislation is the act of voter suppression, those responsible should be held accountable.

Hey jackass thats what laws do!!!! Use common sense if you have any. Layoff the drugs and read a dictionary. The reason we have laws is to stop stuff from happening. Thats why theres laws against domestic violence, tax evasion, drugs, etc. Every year there is voter fraud a lot of that goes undetected until years later. Get a new argument. You can't even find one person this law will hurt. Not one comment on here is from a person this law hurts only people who say it might hurt people. Common liberal tactic. Now you can't cheat. cry about it!!!!

Every election in this country requires that only eligible people can vote. It is not a big deal for people to get the proper ID. Many organizations provide help.

Yes, and that is why when you go to your neighborhood-polling place to vote the trained volunteers there have your name on a form for you to sign because you have already REGISTERED to vote.

This new law will disproportionately affect the elderly and those who do not drive. My parents are both elderly, they have lived and voted in the same place for over 50 years! They have been active in local politics and always have exercised their right to vote. They no longer have valid drivers licenses. Neither one of them are able to spend hours at a DMV office to get a picture ID. My brother is disabled and unable to drive. He does not have a picture ID or other form of ID considered valid. How is he to get to a DMV office? He does not drive and lives in a rural area and yes, he has always voted!

What is the reason for this law?? What is Governor Corbett afraid of? There as been ZERO reports of voter fraud in our state. Again, why do we need a law for something that is not a problem?

My mother, who didn't drive and had Alzheimer's had a valid ID. It took less than 15 minutes and we enjoyed lunch while we were out. Honestly, there are many people out there who would gladly drive someone to get their ID. Jeez!! If it is so difficult to get it done, then how are you going to manage to get out to vote? There are so many more important issues to "fight" about...just get an ID!!!!!

This law is a solution in search of a problem. It is not about voter fraud. It is about
voter suppression by the Republican Party.

Shouldn't every person have a valid ID regardless of an election. There is so much insurance fraud they are asking for valid photo ID. Why wouldn't you want to comply? It is the middle class that suffers the most from fraud. Every student that takes the SAT test needs to prove who they are with photo ID. Why is voting any less critical.

Having a valid ID is not a requirment of citizenship.....but given all the situations with illegals............IT CERTAINLY SHOULD BE ! Voting is a serious matter and should be protected and secured while we still have the right to do so.

Its up to each state actually. Most states if not all have requirements that say you need to have a state ID. Like I said the police can arrest you if you don't have Proper ID, its called a John Doe arrest.

@bill- please site an instance in Pennsylvania where someone has been arrested for not carrying an ID. Is that something you support? cuz that seems extreme, intrusive and unjust. As for banking regulations, those exist as reactions to issue that have occurred. They were just created for the sake of being created. Beyond the base protections the law provides citizens; thou shall not murder, rape, steal, ect. That's how laws should be created, as reactions. And creating laws should require thourough vetting. They shouldn't be made willy nilly because someone suspects something like voter fraud is occurring. This legislation has yet to prove that there is a need for such a reaction.

If you google voter fraud, you will find thousands of cases being litigated in about 15 states. I copied some of them below.

INDIANA 2008 Election officials in Indiana have thrown out more than 4,000 ACORN-submitted voter registrations after finding they had identical handwriting and included the names of many deceased Indianans, and even the name of a fast food restaurant.

MICHIGAN 2008 Clerks in Detroit found a "sizeable number of duplicate and fraudulent [voter] applications" from the Michigan branch of ACORN. Those applications have been turned over to the U.S. Attorney's office for investigation.

2004 The Detroit Free Press reported that “overzealous or unscrupulous campaign workers in several Michigan counties are under investigation for voter-registration fraud, suspected of attempting to register nonexistent people or forging applications for already-registered voters.” ACORN-affiliate Project Vote was one of two groups suspected of turning in the documents.

MISSOURI 2008 Nearly 400 ACORN-submitted registrations in Kansas City have been rejected due to duplication or fake information.

Here are incidents of voter fraud in Pennsylvania. They can be found on the site RottenAcorn.com. Probably there are lots more. These are the ones that were identified.
PA 2009 Seven ACORN workers in the Pittsburgh area were indicted for submitting falsified voter registration forms. Six of the seven were also indicted for registering voters under an illegal quota system.

2008 State election officials have thrown out 57,435 voter registrations, the majority of which were submitted by ACORN. The registrations were thrown out after officials found "clearly fraudulent" signatures, vacant lots listed as addresses, and other signs of fraud.

2008 An ACORN employee in West Reading, PA, was sentenced to up to 23 months in prison for identity theft and tampering with records. A second ACORN worker pleaded not guilty to the same charges and is free on $10,000 bail.

2004 Reading’s Director of Elections received calls from numerous individuals complaining that ACORN employees deliberately put inaccurate information on their voter registration forms. The Berks County director of elections said voter fraud was “absolutely out of hand,” and added: “Not only do we have unintentional duplication of voter registration but we have blatant duplicate voter registrations.” The Berks County deputy director of elections added that ACORN was under investigation by the Department of Justice.
