"Exhausting" and "annoying" are among the most popular words being used to describe the 2012 presidential campaign, according to a recent Pew Research Center poll.

The poll shows both Republicans and Democrats agree on their perception that the election is important, but that the campaigns so far have been dull and negative.

It's not the first time people are saying presidential campaigns drag on too long.

"The public has long expressed the view that presidential campaigns are too long. In surveys conducted over the past three campaigns, asked at different stages in race, no fewer than 50% have said campaigns were too long," according to the Pew Research Center.

Do you agree? Tell us in the comments section below.

I think the American people woukld pay more attention if the campaigns and media money wasn't spent until after July 30. There should be a debate per month held first Tuesday of each month of August, September, October then Vote in November. One debate in the East, one in the West and one in the South should do it. Think of all the money, energy, time, talent and emotions saved if the hateful misleading media and blogs couldn't actually have anything to rant about until after July. Three months to listen to slanted coverage from FOX (conservative), MSNBC (socialist), and CBS (liberal) is fair. Modern communications allow more propaganda from thousands of sources with plenty of time for them to tell lies and try to sway the crowds. Let's face the truth - half of Legal USA Residents just whine about life, but they won't commit the time to help preserve our hard won freedoms by voting, serving in the armed forces, answering the call to on jury duty, or even volunteering in their communities anyway.

No--I am NOT a Rush L. fan. I can't stand his radio voice. I have heard him say something like--"on loan, from God" and that is such a huge turnoff right there, I can listen to him. So whatever else he has to say--I don't want to hear.

Neither candidate is capable of telling the truth. The choice to be made is between having a white liar or a black liar, that isn't much of a choice is it. The only thing that is for sure is that whomever is President, congress will outspend themselves every year, chase more jobs overseas and continue to dismantle the Constitution that the y swore to defend.

Election time demonstrates just how spoiled and polarized the USA has become. Whether it is the politicians or the electorate the sentiment appears to be "your party is to blame for this mess". Compromise and statesmanship are definitely not politically correct anymore.

Exhausted isn't really the right word. Disgusted is a better word. Each side is going to start with the stupid, distorted commercials again. The mud slinging, the rock throwing again is so pathetic. We'll be subjected to months of " and I approve this message" crap again. I could just puke when I hear that anymore. When you think of the millions of dollars that is spent on an election, you have to ask yourself, where did we go wrong as a nation. It's gonna take a whole lot more than money and a balanced budget to restore what our forefathers tried to create. If you think that Obama or (God forbid) Romney is going to kiss it and make it all better, you're in for a huge disappointment. I'm beginning to agree with Mark Twain when he said, " I never vote for a politician, it only encourages them. "

Brian...the sad part is...you have been paying for all those that do not or can not have or afford to have health insurance all along. It was just not as pronounced as it is today. And either way...whether Obamacare goes or stays...or if it is shoved back down Obama's throat...you will continue to pay. The goal is to try and pay minimal either way AND still have a decent type of health care plan yourself. This nation is in serious trouble in many ways. Health care is only ONE of them. What bothers me is how the govt. is creating two classes of health care: us, and them. If Obamacare IS so good, then why did 97% of the legislators vote NO when a bill was floated for them to join 3 years ago? To me...that tells me the story. Our legislators will continue to isolate themselves from the masses, at the taxpayers expense. Sickening at best. Next illegal that walks into an emergency room with a gunshot wound...do you have insurance? No? Then go to the free govt. clinic across the street and stand in line. THAT is the way it should be. If there is to be a line...then it should be a little lower than the govt. has long term planned.

Lies, lies, and more lies. An election is being equated more to a liars match, or better yet an egg throwing contest. It begs to prove the old saying: how can you tell if a politician is lying? His/her lips are moving. 30 years of voting for me and it gets worse every year. I drag myself to the poles now knowing no matter WHO gets in office...the taxpayer gets screwed in the end. The politicians in Washington are the best we can do, for better or for worse. It's important to remember that they are people - just like us - and are as prone to stupidity, arrogance, pride, and selfishness as any of us. And from the looks of the Patch police blotter, some of us are plenty capable of incredibly stupid things.

These politicians are also motivated by those higher impulses that we all find in ourselves, too, a desire to serve the greater good, a love of country and community, compassion, and an urge to make the world a better place.

So, I think we have to stop excusing our problems by bitterly accusing those in power of being these awful beasts who want nothing more than to destroy our country. We are all in this together - us citizens, and those who the we have elected to office. They are not so different from us, and they are certainly not the "enemy".

Those of us who feel the need to demonize the opposition feed the politicians' need to reflect our own impulses. If we don't like the tone in Washington or the inability to actually get good work done it's because we've turned the process into nothing more than a power contest between two impractical ideological extremes that have no bearing on how to actually fix that which is wrong.

So, tone down the disgust, the animosity, the ranting & raving and expressions of fatigue and resignation. Realize that there is good in every one of those elected to office, and realize that it's our job to pull that best out of them. The constant negativity on OUR part is a kind of self-pity that's, lazy, unproductive, and a lousy alternative to accepting the responsibility that we all hold to make things better.

Too many politicians, of both parties, are interested in one thing and one thing only, and that is re-election. They put self interest or party above the good of the country.
Do yourself a favor and pick up the book "The Debt Bomb" by Senator Tom Coburn. He spells it all out.

Dan...your comments are all very well said and appreciated. Thank you. But...to go through life with those thoughts in mind is going through life with rose colored glasses on. Sorry for my honestly. Our elected officials...by your own comment and definition...are only human. They can be bought and sold and very commonly are. That is how politics works today. Its ugly. Its dishonest. Its business. Like a police officer who suffers the wrath moreso than Joe off the street does for breaking the law because that officer is required to answer to a higher call because they are police officers...our elected officials fail to do this miserably. They answer basically to no one. They put themselves in that protective position. I could site hundreds of examples to support my comment to include financial shennanigans, illegal compensation. special treatment you and I would never see, etc. Remember...these humans run for the position of elected peoples representative because it is an honor to be the voice of the people. Boy that sounded good, didn't it? Too bad it is not the way it is today. In my past 25 years of following politics I have found that every year I work harder to defend my rights that are slowly being usurped away. My elected officials are paid premium in this Commonwealth. The are #2 on the pay scale across 50 states. We are #6 on the population scale across the same 50 states. I expect them to work harder and ethical, and put their political posturing to the side.

To say they answer to no one is to ignore the basic fact that they ARE elected officials. Elected by us. We still do live in a constitutional democracy, and elections ARE the only way these people get into office. Yes, they answer to their contributors and to big corporate wishes, and often vote to support big business over the welfare of the common man. But does that mean all elected officials are corrupt all the time? No, Does it mean we abdicate our responsibility to keep trying to get the best results from our elected officials? No. Remember, they are in office because we chose to put them there, and now it is our task to work within this constitutional system to see that improvements are made.

Dan...collectively, and over time, our elected officials have created such a barricade of laws and requirements for Joe the Plumber, a representative from the middle class averaging $44K a year, to run against them...it is nearly impossible. And for anyone that is not seriously interested in serving the people...it just is not worth it. Any possible candidate would need to raise tens of thousands of signatures from their congressional district collected by assistants that live ONLY in that district (this requirement was changed when challenged in court...now my Aunt Mable who lives in Tamaqua can come down and help me collect signatures). Hundreds of thousands of dollars in contributions needed to fend off an incumbents attacks on my personal life...not my political experience...because I have yet to have any. This is how the incumbents have protected themselves from a challenge from a 'newbie'. And it never was that way. As the political institution changed...the incumbents got smarter, they got greedy, they bought off the judges to allow them to change the laws. So...how does our vote abdicate a politician...like Pat Browne for example...that has been in office way too long? They are in office, Dan, because they created the rules to keep themselves there. And in seeing how Pat Browne tried to tap into MY local tax money and strip the wealth from SWT or increase my local taxes to compensate for the loss...all to save a city that needs a Mayor...Pat Browne crossed the line.

Dan McKinney - "They" may be elected officials but "they" are clearly in the pockets of big money and as SWT Resident has made clear, it is basically impossible for a lay person to run for a national office not to say anything of winning an election. Furthermore, just for the record, we do not live in a democracy, we live in a republic. If this were truly a democracy, there would be referendums for just about everything, when in fact there are referendums only rarely and never for national issues, only for local issues. Why is that do you think?

I don't agree, you say they are people "just like us" but they are not. They have voted themselves into a special club. A club that gets special treatment. They get full pay retirement benefits after only 4 years in office, they exempted themselves from insider trader laws, and now, just when medical science has or is about to discover the "fountain of youth" and the cure for cancer they are forcing us into Obama-care while exempting themselves. They are going to get the cure for cancers and we are going to get death counseling. You talk like we are in this together but we aren't We go to war, we pay taxes, we feel the pain of the mortgage crisis, we feel the pain at the pump, we loose the jobs they go overseas, they don't. That wasn't bad enough but now they are going to get medical care while we are told to drop dead. Where is the altruism in that!

The only thing that Washington has done in the past 10 years is take. Take our rights away, take the value of our homes away, take the value of our money away. Clinton is flying the globe desperately trying to get a treaty against guns signed so that Washington can take another right away without voting on it. That is an important part of the strategy, because Washington "insiders" need us to be unarmed when people like you finally realize that Nancy Pelosi is going to be celabrating her 150th birthday well after you are dead your children are getting told to die with dignity at 65 years of age so that they don't have to give them social security.

To equate the position of middle class Americans with that of the Jews in Nazi Germany is an example of the kind of demonization of American elected officials that I'm talking about. That's an affront to those who died at the hands of the Nazis. Neither you nor your family have been imprisoned, tortured, executed, and nor will you be. There is a knowable world out there that we all live in, and that world does not include middle class Americans as hapless victims of genocide at the hands of their own government. To say and believe such things represents an abdication of responsibility because it moves one into a realm of fantasy, not reality, and in that fantasy world no change can ever be effected. Those who promote such ideas are the ones to blame for partisan gridlock in Washington. Our elected officials have to respond to an electorate that is so far removed from reality that there is no room for compromise, no room for anything but inflexible ideology.

Dan...yet, we haven't been. It is common knowledge for those that research it that the federal govt. has built and maintains civilian internment camps all throughout Montana. They also have railroad cars with shackles parked and ready to be moved anywhere across the US to pick up detainees as needed and return them to Montana where hundreds of thousands can be jailed in each camp. A law Congress passed in 2006, HR 5122, gave the President soul authority and right to commandeer Federal and State National Guard Troops for use against American citizens during national Martial Law enactments. The bill is entitled the John Warner Defense Appropriation Act for Fiscal Year 2007. I encourage you to research it. My point is although it may not seem right for this nation to fall to Martial Law, the laws are in place, as is the money in a national emergency fund, to hunt you and your family down and lock you all up with NO trial as an enemy of the nation. Its not fantasy. It is reality. It may never be used against us, the American people. But the govt is prepared to do what they have to to remain in charge. In knowing what I know I am not willing to lay down my arms or my guard for what I consider a corrupt govt that is only interested in one thing: their survival and money. So if anyone fired the first shot of mistrust...its your own govt. that has. Slowly we are losing our abilities and rights as protected under the US Constitution. Remember your Congress passed these laws.

When Congress joins Obama Care, and drops their special insurance program and joins Social Security and drops their special pension plan, repeals every other "exemption from the laws they write and begins to live by the same rules that they have so graciously set for me, then maybe I'll believe that they have my interests at heart.
The two party system is broken, we do not get a choice. We get a sham. Proof of this was the last election. Bush wanted to bail out the banks, insurance companies and the auto industry. He was called an idiot by Obama. Once elected Obama bailed out the banks, insurance companies and the auto industry. Don't you get it, the banks, insurance companies and auto industry run this country. Everyone of us to come together and say: NO MORE. Someone tell me why in the world an elected official needs to be exempt from insider trading laws? Especially if THEY are people like us. They are exempt because they wanted to be. Why? So they can cheat and legally get away with it. You or I...we'd be sitting in jail. I have hundreds of other inequities I can state as well. Most people don't know about them unless you research bills and laws line by line through fancy lawyer written BS language disguised specifically so the inequity does not jump off the page at the common man or woman. Look at per diems in PA. $163 per in-session day. For some elected officials that amounts to another $60,000 a year on top of their salary and pension. And they ghost vote...they aren't even there. Why? Because they wrote the law that way so they could continue to rip the taxpayers off. It goes on and on and on. And we, the good little sheeps we are, just go through life and let it all happen until it gets to where it is now: too late. And those that tell people that DO follow the inequities that we're speaking out of line...lol. I laugh at those people. At least I like to see when I am getting the shaft.

Was always surprised that such an inexperienced and untested man as Obama was even elected. I think too many un informed people thought it was cool to vote for the first African American president that they did not look closely enough at the person he really is and if that person's ideas were really right for this country. Obama has NO skills to be a leader. In fact his Saul Alinsky training taught him to divide people, and pit them against one another. Just like his latest ploy to give tax breaks to "regular" people, but not the "rich". Never mind that EVERY economic analyst says many of the "rich" are business owners, and a greater tax on them can have nothing but a negative effect on the economy... Obama does not care about the economy getting better... in fact, a bad economy is a more fertile ground in which to use his Alinsky methodology.... he is riding this "justice" and "fairness" thing hard... it's his separate and divide plan... get the "regular" folks hating the rich. never mind the rich pay like 80% of federal taxes already... let's hate them because they are successful...
Obama has NO ideas about anything, especially the economy. But he understands how simple minded his base is... do nothing for gays for 3.5 years, then say you have "evolved".... realizing that once you are in office, you will not do a damn thing for gays, and won't be able to get any legislation passed becuase you are SOOO devisive a "leader" (really not a leader at all), and hispanics, who are too dense to see Obama does not give a damn about them, or he would have done something in his first 2 years when he controlled congress.. now he throws them a bone and they all cheer... once he is in they will get NOTHING in his second term.

The Demos squandered their time in office when they should have been doing alot more as well. I can't fault one Repub or one Demo for where this nation is. Its ALL OF THEM. The Repubs are soooooooo busy trying to get Obama out of office absolutely any way they can...they are a joke. The People and the business of the People has been put last. I swear if you walk past the Repub crappers in Washington all you will hear out of them is Get Obama...Get Obama...Get Obama. And if you walk into the Demo lunch room...all you see is Demos walking around bumping into one another going...DOH! DOH! DOH!...like Homer Simpson. I don't care WHO gets into office or if Obama stays. We need action for the people. Period. Businesses had their chance over the past 4 years. All they do is have their hand out for yet MORE money...to create jobs. And the bottom half of the scale...as well as illegal aliens...have their hand out to Obama looking for a gift as well. How about someone come up with something for the middle class so we can afford to live, have some money to help kick this economy into gear, and send our kids to school for an education? There is only ONE answer: Commonwealth Constitutional Convention and reset the laws that have been created to enhance, protect, ensure, enrich. and retain incumbents. I can see requiring 1000 signatures from a congressional district to get on the ballot. But tens of thousands? That is a full time job for an army of volunteers. And give each candidate $150,000 out of the Cacus bank accounts that are sitting stuffed with $180M currently so our so called elected officials are sure to get paid when the state spigot is shut off because a budget is not passed (I really like this one they pulled...created their OWN bank accounts with Taxpayer money...$180M would put a lot of kids in college) to allow each candidate a fair run at one another. To me...that is Democracy. May the best man OR woman win based on their ability to sell themselves to the public. Today we have bought and paid for beholding to other than the voters elected officials. And that is NOT a Democracy. Its ugly. And its why this Commonwealth and this nation is in the condition it is in. My vote no longer counts. Harrisburg and the entire system needs to be torn down and rebuilt from the ground up. How is he even remotely similar to those individuals? it's this kind of thinking that's wrecked the process, devolved the discourse to hate speech. I mean, seriously, can you even explain what you mean by him "terrorizing" us?

Look people the bottom line is both of these so called American Candidates are working for themselves, they don't give a damn about you or I or the issues at hand. All their looking to do is make their pockets fat and they don't care who gets hurt in the mix. I saw 1 comment on here about Obama dividing us, ok dude if you haven't seen it you're blind as hell. But all this bickering and fighting amongst ourselves needs to stop. We The People need to ban together and get everyone who currently is in office now OUT!!!! They need to go and Now!!!! That is the only way to get our Country Back. Our Country has been highjacked by GREED!!! We need to get back to the way of the Founders, We need to put GOD back in to Society, in our way of living, in our Schools. I know some if not most of you are rolling your eyes and those of you who are, NEED TO WAKE UP and SOON!!!!! Pull your head out of your ass and clean the shit out of your ears and eyes. Wake UP!!!! We are in deep deep shit and GOD is the only one at this point who can pull us out... And you don't need to take my word for it, read the bible it's all in there.... The bible tells you for the most part of what's going on today.... For you book readers out there, here's a book for you " When The Crosses are Gone" Great Book a Must read, it gives you a real good perspective of the shit going on, From the Schools, media, government and so on...
