Compassion, patience, determination and friendship.

These are the words used to describe The Miracle League, a non-profit organization that allows children with disabilities to play America's favorite pastime – baseball.

There are currently 240 custom baseball diamonds across the nation, each of which are made up of a rubberized surface that accommodates wheelchairs and other assisting devices.

On November 23, Richard Agretto, the Miracle League of Northampton County Board of Director's president, announced that one of these specialized fields would be coming to the Charles Chrin Community Center complex in Palmer Township.

"Every child deserves a chance to play baseball in their community," Agretto told a room of families and supporters, adding later, "Rather than focusing on their disabilities, we're focusing on their possibilities. This allows for a whole new world of opportunities for these children."

Gary Fagan, the father of an 11-year-old boy who is autistic and non-verbal, can't wait to see his son on the field.

"I'm thrilled that Chad will have a place to play baseball," said Fagan, of Palmer, as Chad stood at his side. "My other son has had a chance to play and I'm glad Chad will now have his chance in the sun."

Emmaus residents Tom and Kathy McGovern, the parents of three biological children and four adopted children, were also on hand to lend their support. Each of their adopted children have a variety of disabilities.

"Next week we'll drive 360 miles between going to doctor appointments and having medical procedures done," said Kathy, adding that her children do a lot of things that aren't fun, but that the Miracle League brings fun and friends into each of their children's lives.

The field will cost $250,000 to build and is expected to open in the spring of 2012. The league says donations and corporate sponsorships will help fund the field. It is also working with the Easton Women's Softball League and Twin Rivers Baseball League, and is seeking non-profit status.

 Agretto is ready for that first swing of a bat. "I cannot wait for opening day."
