Paul Ryan a Good VP Pick Say Lehigh Valley GOP Members
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has selected Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan as his vice presidential running mate. Lehigh Valley and Pennsylvania Republicans weigh in.
Reaction was swift across the country to Mitt Romney's choice of Paul Ryan as his running mate in the 2012 presidential election.
A Red Keystone Snap Poll by Patch found strong support for Ryan among Pennsylvania Republicans.
Whether reached Saturday by email or phone, or in release of a prepared statement, Lehigh Valley Republicans and the Pennsylvania Republican Party chair lauded the pick.
Here is what they said:
* U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent: "Governor Romney made a smart choice by selecting Paul Ryan to be his Vice Presidential running mate. Representative Ryan couples a warm personality and manner with a keen intellect. He has focused on bringing America’s debt under control so that it won’t continue to impede economic growth and job creation. And, he’s done this in a bipartisan manner, incorporating ideas to deal with our structural debt crisis that prominent Democrats have suggested. Paul Ryan has offered serious suggestions and solutions that address the enormous fiscal and debt issues confronting our nation, and that is in stark contrast to President Obama’s appalling lack of leadership on these matters.
"On a personal note, there’s no doubt that he’ll be an energetic campaigner. I’ve done enough P90X workouts with him to tell you that he’ll hit the campaign trail on his feet and running.
* Easton Republican committeeman Ronnie Del Bacco was just getting back from vacation early Saturday when the news broke, but hadn't heard about Romney's announcement until Patch called.
"You just made my day," he said in a phone interview.
"Yes, Paul Ryan is a fantastic choice," Del Bacco added, praising Ryan's budget plan and his record as a fiscal conservative.
He said he had expected Romney to pick New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie or Florida Senator Marco Rubio, "based on the hype."
Still, Del Bacco said he thinks most Republicans will be excited by the pick.
* Writer/Commentator Pamela Varkony, former Lehigh County Republican Committee member and former Allentown City Council member: "Rep. Ryan is a strong and bold choice, certainly not the "safe" pick of [Ohio Sen. Rob] Portman or [former Minnesota Gov. Tim] Pawlenty that many, myself included, expected.
As with any of the potential nominees that Gov. Romney could have chosen, Ryan brings strengths and challenges to the campaign.
By political standards he's young, younger than President Obama was when he ran, and an equally strong speaker. He brings an energy and vibrancy to the campaign that should serve it well heading in to the convention and the debates.
His strength of character and faith speaks to his blue collar background and someone who came up the hard way. To the best of my knowledge, there's never been a whiff of scandal around him. Although if there's anything out there I'm sure the Democratic opposition research team is working overtime right now trying to find it.
His biggest strength will also be the campaign's biggest challenge. Ryan has been willing to march in to the den of the deficit monster armed with little more than his determination and core principles. To slay that dragon, drastic measures are necessary. My hope is that the campaign messaging team will raise their game and find a way to explain to America, particularly her seniors, how and why budget cuts are necessary, and most importantly, spell out exactly what it will mean to each age group.
I believe Americans are willing to accept entitlement reform and the sacrifice that comes with it if only someone will offer them a coherent explanation of what reform looks like and how it will affect them personally. If anyone can do that, it's Paul Ryan."
* Lehigh County Controller Glenn Eckhart, who will be a delegate to the Republican National Convention later this month: "I think the pick of Paul Ryan is a defining moment in the campaign. Paul Ryan's leadership on protecting Medicare and Social Security while looking to providing opportunity for our younger folks with a new system that will be there when they retire is what good hardworking Americans want. His leadership in helping to balance the budget and protecting the future of our children and grandchildren so that they may have an America that we have had the opportunity to have. His leadership in tax policy and spending issues will help to promote a robust economy helping to create jobs and opportunity to all Americans that want it.
* Lehigh County Republican Committee member Dean Browning, a former Lehigh County commissioner: "It is a great choice for two reasons. First, it changes the electoral college calculus and makes it more favorable for Governor Romney.
"Second, and more importantly, it changes the focus of the election and presents an opportunity for both parties to discuss their plans for the fiscal direction our country should pursue.
"President Obama's last budget was voted down 99-0 by a Senate controlled by his own party. And under his leadership we have gone three years without the Senate approving a budget. Meanwhile the deficit has topped $1 trillion every year President Obama has been in office. Meanwhile Representative Ryan has developed a budget plan that was passed by the House of Representatives.
The argument that will be made against Representative Ryan is that his budget plan "kills Medicare and Social Security." The counter argument is that anyone who has passed sixth grade math can figure out that both programs will cease to exist if we continue on the current path as advocated by President Obama and his party. Representative Ryan has presented a credible plan to solve our fiscal problems in a way that ensures that both Social Security and Medicare will survive to serve those in the middle class that are counting on those programs. Representatives Ryan's plan has been embraced by Governor Romney and that gives voters an opportunity to select the candidates and approach they feel will best address the country's fiscal problems.
* Barbara Walters, head of the Lehigh Valley Tea Party: Walters said the group doesn't endorse candidates but acknowledged that Ryan's views are more in line with those of her organization than the Obama campaign's. "I think he will energize the base," she said of the pick.
* Republican Party of Pennsylvania Chairman Rob Gleason, in a prepared release, congratulated Ryan on being selected running mate and slammed President Obama's record.
“Pennsylvanians will be well served by a Romney-Ryan team in White House that can finally shut the door on President Obama’s four years of high unemployment, out-of-control spending, and usher a new era of American prosperity," he said in a prepared release.
"Pennsylvania will be first in line to send Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan to the White House when we deliver our 20 electoral votes this November.
Meanwhile, Democrats were quick to criticize Romney's choice:
* Pennsylvania Democratic Party Chair Jim Burn released a statement. It read in part: “Mitt Romney's selection of Paul Ryan proves once again that he has the wrong agenda for middle class Pennsylvanians. Paul Ryan shares Mitt Romney's commitment to helping the wealthy at the expense of the middle class. Ryan is the author of a budget plan that will increase taxes for the middle class and end Medicare as we know it, all to fund tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans."
Patch users voted in an online poll and posted dozens of comments on the news.

This is great!! Why should our elected officials get über great benefits that we pay for while we continually get taxed and asked to give up more and more??????

You obviously are NOT a senior citizen living in your own home, can NO longer work, on a fixed income, have health issues, and who does NOT want to a burden on your children!!!

I AM a permanently disabled veteran in my 30s, with plenty of health problems, living on a fixed income and I don't want to be a burden on my children either. I think this is a great pick. I've lived with that "government health insurance" for over 10 years now through the VA (Veteran's Administration), where I get free medicine and medical treatment. I currently spend between $300 to $400 out of my own pocket on other doctors and medicine that the VA won't prescribe because it is not in their formulary. The government didn't want to pay to have it available for veterans like me, so I had to get a private doctor out of my own pocket and pay for the medicine out of my own pocket. The VA won't even allow their doctors to write a prescription for me to fill it at a pharmacy and pay for it myself.
Then there are the things like MRIs and CAT scans that they won't do. I have a hard time walking and they wouldn't do anything more than give me an x-ray that showed degenerative bone disease in my knees and a government-issued cane.
I have a severe allergy to something, though I don't know what, because the VA won't give me an allergy test. They prescribe me allergy medicine I have to take everyday to keep breathing right instead of giving me a simple test so I can avoid whatever it is I'm allergic to.
I can't hear well out of my right ear and they wouldn't do a simple hearing test. I had to pay to go to Muhlenberg and get one. Guess what? I'm almost deaf in that ear.

That is a horrible story and sad to hear. But get ready to pay even more money. Currently, had an MRI a few years back. Cost $13k plus after care and a 1 hour of hospital room = $25,000. At least the VA covered something. Now the private health care company is denying for pre-existing condition and dictating to me what doctor I can see and what they will pay for even though the doctor is telling me I need to do this and that, the private health care company says no. I guess they know best

Tony, thank you for the compassion, I appreciate it. What you're describing is precisely what I go through with the VA. The VA wouldn't check my hearing, do a CAT Scan or MRI or do anything other than basic x-rays. As for medicine that I need, there are some they aren't even allowed to prescribe. I could only get them because I have Social Security Disability with Medicare and Medicare helped pay for part of my visits to a private doctor.
I worry that government controlled healthcare will turn into what I deal with, with the VA... just like you described, some bureaucrat making decisions on what's medically necessary for me instead of my doctor. I have to use Medicare, like the elderly... another government controlled program that pays less than half of most things and none of others.
I don't want special treatment, I don't want to work the system, all I want is to be able to live my life with a reasonable amount of pain that I can handle, so I can be with my wife and kids, instead of up in my bedroom most of the day. I understand what you're saying about Romney and Ryan, along with the differences each one wants to make. Likely, nothing will change no matter who wins, that's the way it usually goes. If it does, all I want is to be treated fairly. I served my country and came back a different man, now I just want to be able to support my family and live a somewhat normal life.

Continued- They also determined that something is likely pressing on the auditory nerve and I need a CAT Scan of my head for them to see what it is. Who's paying for that, ME. That's why I've put it off for 6 months, because I don't have the $1000+ that will be my copay with Medicare.
It's like the VA therapist for PTSD. He's great, sometimes. Other times, he was angry and frustrated when I walked in the door, from being overloaded with patients. He could see me once every month and a half because of how many people he had on his schedule. Seriously good treatment there, VA, thanks! No wonder so many vets are committing suicide, they feel like they have no support and with the VA, they don't. I pay about $40 a week to see a private doctor as my copay with Medicare and he's helping me. I'd spend every penny they gave me if it would make me better so I could be a husband and dad to my family again, but I'll never be the man I was an I'm ok with that, as long as I can still support my family.
I volunteered for the service and I'd do it again if I had the chance to go back. I was proud to serve our country. Things happen sometimes and I don't blame the military. My problem is the sheer joke that is VA healthcare and the Allentown VA clinic and Wilkes Barre VA hospital. Don't promise to help and treat me, then say, "Sorry, it's too expensive.

I go to the VA too and thats exactly what Obama wants to do with our healthcare across the nation. Instead of help patients get better they just want to medicate you. They offer drugs and simple procedures to keep costs down. I went for a procedure in Wilkes Barre and it required sedation. They tried to save money by using half the dosage they were suppose too. End result I woke up in the middle of t he Procedure and it was painful. They botched the test and the end result was I went to a civilian doctor to get the test done right at my expense. Socialized healthcare is only good if your healthy but if your sick good luck. Not many doctors except medicaid. They pay shit compared to the doctors actual costs. Medicare pays better but still hard to find doctors willing to take it unless you can pay the copay up front. Gets expensive if you get sick. Semper Fi from a USMC vet

I think it is a good pick... Will bolster Conservative confidence in the ticket. Personally, I am not sure if I am voting Republican this fall, but this helps, yes.
I still don't like the fact that the Party really nominates the man, not the people, but this has been going on for 150 odd years... All in all, I will probably vote with this ticket.

still doesn't take away that Romney is a bad forced pick by the GOP and fox news. Ron Paul should be the nominee but then again there is no choice. Stuck and forced with Romney, which Romney nobody knows. www.whichmitt.com/videos
Romney 100% agreed with everything Obama stands for up until about 1 year ago. Switched on everything.

It's going to be a close race, Tony, and I'm not sure who will win. May be neaarly as close as 2000. On the plus for Obama - he has proved he is a decent leader, foriegn policy wise (although not seriously tested). Also he is black - which will, as a matter of fact, help with that vote. Yet, on the downside, there still exists this sluggish, if not poor economy. I see Romney winning by 40 odd e.v.

I would of liked Marco Rubio. He's a good family man and a strong Catholic. Personally I think whoever wins in 2012 will not be there in 2016. Of course if Obama wins hes only got one term left and if Romeny wins he will be a one term President. I like in 2016 Chris Christie and Marco Rubio Ticket.

With this pick, too bad for Mitt. He's out. Well, Mitt was out to begin with but now this only solidifies the conclusion and slams the door shut. Many people don't want the government sticking their noses in their business, but when those same people need help, the go running with their hands out and accept what that very same government gives them & they are glad for it. Depends on what side of the fence your on. Has nothing to do with the political nature of it. Just is what it is. No happy medium anywhere anymore. Too bad.

Spirited debate; first sorry to hear of Nazareth Man’s problems and the lackluster VA response. Thank you for your Service and sacrifice. Regarding the Ryan choice – great pick. Romney and the GOP were going to be attacked anyway for their programs and policies, so might as well have the most articulate spokesman on the ticket and address the "third rail" head-on. No matter what planet you are on you must acknowledge that we have serious, if not fatal, fiscal problems, ala Greece and Spain. We could bury our heads in the sand, print more $$$s, and borrow from the Chinese, or we could address the problem. We are headed for the cliff at 80MPH, the Ryan plan slows the speed to 40 MPH; we will need that time to refine and craft a more effective plan. Remember - neither the President nor the Senate have passed a budget in three plus years and the debt has increased by neigh onto $6T. It will be interesting to see what the final budget proposal plank in the GOP platform will be. As a retiree on Medicare I know I will pay more for that service, but by doing so there will be something left for our children and grandchildren.
When outnumbered by an advancing force sometimes the best choice is to advance thru the center of their line.

I worry about any candidate that had Ayn Rand as one of their early 'role models'. If he liked Rand in his early years and has since repudiated her, I still see her beliefs reflected in his budget plan. I am worried about Catholic that was not disgusted by her statements about abortion etc.
