Is "King" Visiting Easton Really a King?

Ambassador to Ghana says man coming to Easton next week is a chief, not a king.

Is the king of Ghana's Ga people really a king?

Next week, an Easton Area High School graduate and native of Ghana once known as -- he now goes by the title "Nii Guate Asuasa Ekasee Ako II, Ga War-Council King of Akra" -- will visit Easton.

But although this is being billed as a "royal visit," is Guate really royalty?

Not according to Ghana's ambassador to the United States, who tells the Morning Call that Guate can't be a king.

"Do not refer to him as a king," said Daniel Ohene Agyekum, the ambassador. "He is not a king to us."

The paper also spoke to the leader of the Ga people in the United States, who says that Guate is a tribal chief, not a king.

Guate himself refuted these claims, while Easton Mayor Sal Panto says that "enough people call him king to me that I call him king."

King or chief, Guate is expected to arrive in Easton on Friday, June 29.
