In Easton, Reactions Vary to bin Laden's Death
Some people celebrate, others see it as a symbol.
In Easton Monday, reactions to Osama bin Laden's death ranged from celebration to suspicion.
When the news broke Sunday night, people poured into Mother's Bar in Centre Square, said owner Phil Simonetta. Many of them had seen something the bar posted on its Facebook page:
"They Killed Bin Laden... Got the Bastard !!!!!!!!!!!!"
"It's amazing," Simonetta said Monday. "Technology, man."
City resident Rob Tillman heard about the raid on bin Laden's hideout early Monday morning.
His first thought: "We finally got him. It's about damn time."
Harold Semal, also of Easton, said a lot of the discussion of bin Laden's life and crimes was too simplistic.
"The 'Why?' is most important," he said. "You hear a lot about what he did. Where did it start?"
A few people raised suspicions about whether bin Laden was even dead. Others saw his death as a mostly symbolic victory.
Even at Mother's -- the scene of celebration the night before -- saw the mood subdue in the light of day, where very sober public officials talked on cable news shows on the TV over the bar.
"It's nowhere near over, for sure," Simonetta said.
