Do You Want Armed Guards in Easton Schools?

The NRA on Friday called for every school in the country to have armed guards. Is that a solution?

Earlier this week -- in the wake of the Connecticut school shooting -- we asked if Easton should restore security guards to its elementary schools.

On Friday, the National Rifle Association said that needs to happen in every school in the nation. And not just guards, but guards with guns.

"Can't we afford to put a police officer in every single school?" asked NRA executive vice president Wayne LaPierre.

That's a question school officials will be asking in the next few weeks. (Easton Area High School and Easton Area Middle School already have armed police officers, the Express-Times noted Friday.)

Is LaPierre's suggestion something all schools need to adopt? Take our poll, and tell us in the comments.

I guess the question is, do you think an unarmed security guard could stop someone who is entering with a weapon.

Call in tonight at 8 PM at (718) 508-9465 for a radio show on this very topic...hat can Easton Do for Gun Control Laws?

Pennsylvania has been know for easy access to guns.

Many New Yorkers come to Pennsylvania come and live here just so they can use guns. How should this state react to the recent event in Connecticut and should gun laws be changed?

An armed guard would be the best deterrent of another disaster.

Go one step further and arm the teachers too. We already trust these teachers with the lives of our children all day long. Those who are legally able to posses a gun should train and carry. Get rid of the "gun free zones" too. They welcome criminals and advertise which areas have unarmed victims just waiting to be shot.

My mother taught elementary school for many years. While legally able to possess a gun, she would be repelled by the notion of carrying one while in school. I suspect the vast majority of teachers, parents and school boards would agree.

Let's arm all the kids too! If someone knew they were entering a school that everyone was armed, even the kindergartner kids, they'd probably not take the chance. Let's return to the days of the wild west where everyone had a gun! Seriously, are we going to be reactionary to such violence? We used to joke that schools felt like prisons. Now we are thinking armed guards patrolling the hallways will help? We want a free society, and this is not the answer, folks. The NRA has rejected President Obama because they fear a police state. Now they want what is akin to a police state themselves???

I like the idea of banning the sale (and resale) of rapid-fire assault weapons and large ammunition clips. Also, requiring identity checks for all sales, including at "gun shows". Also, a heavy tax on the sales of guns and ammunition, to finance the security personnel at schools and other public places. (My school taxes are already sky high and escalating-- I don't think I should now be asked to foot the bill to protect the school kids for the sake of the right to carry arms. With rights come responsibilities. It is the responsibility of those who exercise their gun rights to pay for the protection of those who don't.)

I find it odd that all the sudden teachers are awesome and responsible enough to carry weapons on school campuses, but not all that long ago they were demonized as lazy union thugs sucking the public dry and unworthy of a pension. So which is it? And are those in favor of such a thing thinking that teachers are just going to take on this new responsibility without asking for an increase in pay? I'm with those who don't see militarizing our schools as the solution.

The schools ALREADY are militarized and I completely agree with you about how we don't want to pay teachers more but we want them now to tote guns- that's nuts! AND I also do not want to pay more for armed anyones at the schools.
Already it is run like a jail, what do we expect if we make them go 13 years and wonder why they feel such rage when we let them out.....we make it like a jail.
In the long run unless you have armed guards outside as well (or just keep them inside the whole day with out recess) there are many way to get them if some sick-o wants too. Are we going to wall in the schools as well? And make drop off and pick up in some tunnel- get real and get off the armed feel good crap it's wont make a bit of difference except cost a ton!$$$$$$$$$$

I am in favor of a retired police officers, military vets or other qualified persons who are/have been trained in dealing with gun violent situations…not teachers. There is so much waste and corruption in the school’s budgets; it could be easily paid for if priorities were where they should be.

no way- no how! We don't want war vets with high numbers of PTSD having guns around kids.....not a good idea!

I agree with kicks on 4th. Or to ask a question of Mr. LaPierre of the NRA, "Exactly how do you tell your 'good guys' from your 'bad guys'?"

Also, training for military service is not very relevant to guarding schools.

Newsflash Easton already has armed police officers in every school!!! My daughter goes to Paxinosa, I see the officer every morning and afternoon. I myself have my Concealed weapons permit and I carry my weapon every where but when i take my daughter to school I have to leave it in my car which makes no sense. I can carry my gun almost ever where except the one place I should be allowed too carry to protect my daughter and myself. One officer for over 600 kids, not highly effective. I spent 5 years in the Marines and qualified Expert. Just saying If stuff did go down I should be able to protect my kid and others.

High on Lehigh Thats why its called a right. Use common sense. Thats like saying people who want to vote should have to pay more than people who don't vote. rights are guaranteed privileges are earned and have to be paid for.

I don't think teachers should be armed but Principals should, for their safety and the kids. Principals are responsible for the whole school and many do carry guns already. This may come as a shock to you people. My uncle is a superintendent of schools and all of his principals carry in school as well does he. If the Principal was armed at Sandy Hook those kids and herself might still be alive. If there was a armed guard as well the likely hood of them all being alive jumps much higher.
