A Look at Easton's Recent Homicides

Remembering those who have lost their lives to violence in Easton in the last two years.

Since we launched in November 2010, we've covered six homicides: five in the city, one in Williams Township. The most recent one was the fatal stabbing just four days ago on Ferry Street.

We're taking this space today to remember those victims.

Joselynn Urquia

Eleven weeks into her life, Urquia was beaten to death by her father, Joseph in their apartment on Seventh Street. She died after spending two days in the hospital. Joseph Urquia was sentenced to 20-40 years in prison after pleading guilty last year to third degree murder.

Kimiko Moon

Moon, 43, of Easton's Highlands section, was shot in her home on Christmas Eve 2010, and died from her wounds 10 days later. Her killer, John McGlinchey III of Bucks County, pleaded guilty to the murder in October 2011, and was sentenced to life in prison.

George Humbert

Easton police have never said how Humbert, 54, of 25 S. Sixth St., was killed. His death -- on March 6, 2011 -- was ruled a homicide, but investigators have declined to release his cause of death.

Mark Werkheiser

According to police, Werkheiser, 38, was shot to death while he slept in his home in Williams Township on March 15, 2012. Elizabeth Collazo -- his ex-girlfriend -- and the mother of his four children -- has been charged with first degree murder, and is facing the death penalty.

Matthew Kelly

Kelly, a 20-year-old Nazareth native living in Bethlehem at the time of his death, was killed during a shooting April 1 in the 1100 block of Spruce Street. His death is being investigated by the Northampton County grand jury.

William Thompson

Thompson, 43, died Tuesday morning after being stabbed several times on the 600 block of Ferry Street. Police have charged Lawrence Gaines, 44, with criminal homicide in Thompson's death.

What about the shooting that occurred on the corner of 14/ lehigh? A stronger police presence in the community is vital to keep the crime down. To sit in a parking lot hoping for someone to run a light, is not very productive. Patrolling and knowing the people in the area is always beneficial. To all.
