6 Things to Do In Easton This Weekend

The last day of the outdoor Farmers' Market, jazz at the Lafayette Bar, and more...

Hey everyone. It's Friday, which means it's time to look ahead to this weekend.

1. Saturday is the final day of the outdoor version of the Easton Farmers' Market. Next week, it moves indoors to the Nuture Nature Center. The market runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Centre Square.

2. The Frank Giasullo Quartet performs at the Lafayette Bar's jazz night Saturday at 9.

3. Looking for books? Take a drive to Riegelsville, where the public library is holding a book sale tonight from 7 to 9, and again Saturday and next Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

4. Salvage Goods celebrates its two-year anniversary Saturday, with refreshments, prizes and the music of guitarist Matt Franco from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

5. Lafayette College's chamber orchestra performs Sunday afternoon from 3 to 4 at the school's Williams Center.

6. Also Sunday, Easton's Interfaith Choral Festival -- featuring choirs from 10 different local houses of worship -- is happening at 3 p.m. at Bnai Abraham Synagogue in Wilson.

Number 2 won't cost you to park, assuming you can find an open meter downtown. It begins at 9 p.m. And Lafayette doesn't charge for parking, does it?

Has the Williams Centre added more parking in the area? I didn't think they had any room to, and dang if you can park somewhere else on campus... with school in session, no room, esp. with all the alums flying in for the Lehigh football game!

I'd rather pay for parking and shop at Salvage Goods than park for free at MegaLoMart and suffer the rude people, crowds and crappy merchandise.

But I'm weird.

Pamela,
I didn't take you for the pompous, arrogant, condescending, stereotyping, personality your comment suggests that you are. I'm surprised.
Crowds? Yes.
Crappy merchandise? Perhaps some, but not nearly at the epidemic level you imply.
Rude people? Have you read your own comment?
If you are a representative sample of the majority clientele down town, and I hope you aren't, then "MegaLoMart" definitely sounds like the better option.

Ronnie:

I'm glad you didn't take me for that, because I'm not :)

I have worked in retail on and off for decades, which is the exact reason I avoid malls and big box stores. I loathe the crowds, the pushing, the shoving (and guess what? That goes on in Neiman Marcus just like it goes on in WalMart). As far as suggesting an epidemic, I think you credit me with more poetic license than I deserve :)

I personally prefer to shop in smaller, quieter stores that have gifts that are unique, and for that option and pleasure, I do not mind paying for parking. I do not think that makes me pompous/arrogant/condescending. It makes me cognizant of what I do and do not enjoy in a shopping experience.

If pointing out that generally speaking, malls and big box stores have huge crowds, pushy/shovy people at the holiday shopping season, and a supply of cruddy stuff, then I guess I'll have to cop to being rude in this particular instance.

Pamela,
So glad to hear that isn't who you are.
You usually come across as a reasonable person even in disagreement.
What struck me about your comment was that is seemed to be a "specific" euphemism for WalMart and not just a general statement about all big box stores. Thanks for the clarification.
I too occasionally seek out specialty stores for unique items, but I certainly wouldn't characterize Walmart shoppers and staff as rude in a broad sweeping statement. After all, where else can you buy eggs, milk, boots, and ammo all in one place around here? :)

Ronnie, very true. I know *I* go to WalMart for my caviar and my deer stands. :D
